a free six-part film and discussion series
hosted by renown Jazz musician and educator,
Dr. James Polk

Jazz is an art form invented in early 20th century America. It has evolved into an enduring expression of creativity and innovation. The history of Jazz is much more than the history of an extraordinary musical genre -- it is also the story of central social, political and cultural issues of the 20th century that continue to play a part in our fledgling 21st. Topics covered in the series:

  • The Jazz Age and Harlem as a center of art
  • The Swing Era and Jazz as America's popular music
  • The art of Jazz singers, musicians, and composers
  • Modern Jazz and the fragmentation of Jazz styles

    This series is part of a broader project that includes a Texas Music Museum Jazz Exhibit focusing on Texas contributions to Jazz. The Jazz Exhibit will open in spring of 2007 at the Texas Music Museum Gallery. The project also includes a Texas Music Museum sponsored city- wide high school Jazz competition.

    This is an ongoing exhibit of rare sheet music, consisting of compositions written in praise
    of Texas, the Texas flag and star, the state bird and flower, cities and historic sites, etc.
